“Rolling in the Deep” (Isaac Smeele Remix) by Adele (bandcamp) Are we done with Adele remixes yet? No, I don’t think so. Trippy one here from Prince George artist Isaac Smeele.

“All in a Day” by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros The best album made by an elder statesmen of rock. Ready for a day of wearing a vest.

stream | download | subscribe (RSS, iTunes, Stitcher) Too Many Rappers, Not Enough MC’s - the show starts out by celebrating the Beastie Boys with music from them, their inspirations, and their followers. Then somehow it ends with Carly Rae Jepsen. (note: this was supposed to broadcast May 11, but didn’t, so then it became May 18’s show, because I’m lazy like that). Playlist:
If you’re into music and the internet, you’ve probably heard of Turntable.fm. I liked it, but then I was kicked out because I’m Canadian. Plug.dj is attempting to solve that problem by making an internationally-available service using Soundcloud and YouTube as the music sources. I’m really liking it, but right now most of the rooms are for dance music or pure pop. Skewing more towards an electro-pop/garage rock/indie/hip-hop preference I haven’t found a room that really suits my tastes. So I’m trying to make one— I’ll be hanging out in here all day while I do yardwork, clean the house, and catch up on paperwork. Stop by if you want to check it out— all you need is a Facebook OR a Twitter OR a Google account. And step up to the DJ booth, I’d love to have more people in there.

“Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys Just got back in front of a computer after being out of town. The reason for posting this is self-evident. But it should be said— this is one of the most consistent groups around. Very few bands make one of the best albums of the year twenty years into the career, as the Beasties did last year. I don’t know if it will be their last one, but if so, they certainly went out on top.

Happy Star Wars Day! No Cantina band on today’s show, but there is plenty of good music. Alabama Shakes, a brand new single from Metric, plenty of stuff from the Arts & Crafts label, and British singer Adele running up against French dance duo Daft Punk. “Black” by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi feat. Norah Jones Since Monday was a song I discovered in Breaking Bad, and Tuesday was a Danger Mouse/Norah Jones song, I think it’s appropriate that Wednesday be a Danger Mouse/Norah Jones song featured in the season finale of Breaking Bad (which I just watched last night, and… wow. Glad Season 5 is soon).

“Happy Pills” by Norah Jones (produced by Danger Mouse) (norahjones.com) Many, everything Danger Mouse does is great. Who else has worked with such a diversity of artists and still managed to sound good? Maybe classic Rick Rubin. I suppose you could quibble and say “He doesn’t really work with the artists, he justs adds them to his instrumentation. I’d disagree (you’re not mistaking this for Gorillaz or Broken Bells, even without the vocals), but I guess I’m letting my bias show— I like the Danger Mouse aesthetic, and I don’t care who gets added to it. (this song is on the latest podcast, if you want to check it out)
Almost Mainstream on Stitcher
So just last week I posted about this blog being added to Shuffler.fm and the ability to listen to the songs posted on here in different mediums. Well, another good way to listen to the music I like (and more of it) is through the podcast. Every week, an hour of great music with just a little bit of my annoying voice. And now aside from the standard RSS feed for subscribing, you can add Almost Mainstream to Stitcher. Stitcher is a cool service (web and smartphone app) that acts kind of like Pandora for radio— you pick shows you like, subscribe and listen to them, but also get recommendations based on your listening habits or the different categories that you decide to explore. You can add Almost Mainstream to your line-up here or by searching “Almost Mainstream” in the app. And, I’m also happy to report that the show is being featured in the “What’s New” section of the app’s frontpage. So that’s cool. Thanks to the folks at Stitcher and, again, all of you.
